![]() While this heroic underdog character is in some ways a challenge to traditional concepts of hegemonic masculinity, the challenge is incomplete, in that he remains white, straight and able-bodied. So often in King, the outcast boy who reads and writes speculative stories becomes the voice of the tale, a substitute for King himself, and an example of a certain kind of heroic male-the sensitive underdog who will eventually conquer the bully/monster and/or 'get' the girl. ![]() ![]() In the novels of Stephen King, as well as their screen adaptations, the depiction of child protagonists commingles fear, wonder and nostalgia, especially nostalgia for being the odd person (usually man) out, the loser or 'nerd' in its older, less positive sense. ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the other men on board is an expert harpooner named Ned Land, a 40-year-old from Quebec. After the monster bores a large whole inside the bottom of a Quebecois passenger ship, all unsolved shipwrecks are blamed on the mysterious creature. I thought the writing quality was quite good. The editing was distracting, at times, but that’s hardly the writer’s problem. The historical detail is good, and the hero was very sumptuous. ![]() ![]() If anything, it made me concerned for the conditions of women’s prisons around the world. There are some violent scenes in the prison that some readers might not find appropriate, but I didn’t find it to be anything unbelievable. The plotting is sort of all over the place, through the middle, but it comes back around in the end. Unwilling daughter runs from tyrant father, gets accidentally kidnapped by hot pirate and then imprisoned for piracy. The premise of the book is very interesting. ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately for her Palpatine knows she is still alive but knows the Archive Temple contains a great treasure within. With Vader obviously not happy with the Inquistors, his attentions are turned to his Master, Palpatine, who informs him of another Jedi still out there. Vader even lets the Grand Inquistor know he finds his lot entirely pathetic. There doesn't seem to be any sort of respect between them and the Grand Inquistor has come to know that Vader would rather do things on his own, rather than send anyone out to do it for him. This issue opens with Vader giving the Inquistors a lesson. ![]() ![]() ![]() McCloud shows his reader how to master the human condition through word and image in a brilliantly minimalistic way. Now, in Making Comics, McCloud focuses his analysis on the art form itself, exploring the creation of comics, from the broadest principles to the sharpest details (like how to accentuate a character's facial muscles in order to form the emotion of disgust rather than the emotion of surprise.) And he does all of it in his inimitable voice and through his cartoon stand-in narrator, mixing dry humor and legitimate instruction. In Reinventing Comics, McCloud took this to the next level, charting twelve different revolutions in how comics are generated, read, and perceived today. ![]() Scott McCloud tore down the wall between high and low culture in 1993 with Understanding Comics, a massive comic book about comics, linking the medium to such diverse fields as media theory, movie criticism, and web design. ![]() The renowned author of Understanding Comics offers brilliant instruction on how to actually create this widely beloved art form. Magnificent The best how-to manual ever published. ![]() ![]() ![]() That should have been pretty obvious for any who realized that this was a series, but I digress. Things like the fact that Cabal survives the first book, is not damned to hell at the end, and wins back his soul. To the uninitiated, what are you doing reading a review of the second book in a series without having read the first book or review? That’s pretty silly and just asking for things to be spoiled. You can imagine my excitement when I first discovered that the second book in the Johannes Cabal series was titled Johannes Cabal the Detective, the increase in my excitement when it was revealed that said detecting took place on a dirigible, and my final and greatest flux in excitement when the book turned into a Cabal-themed Murder on the Orient Express with the titular necromancer as the main character. ![]() If there’s one last thing I like, it’s dirigibles. If there’s one more thing I like, it’s murder mysteries. If there’s one thing I enjoy, it’s horror stories. ![]() ![]() After he begins flying, Antoine has several exhilarating and frightening experiences.
